Summary

Lieutenant Colonel Sean Drummond, a cocky US Army lawyer who’s not afraid to be blunt, finds himself up to his neck in a case he didn’t ask to take。

Five US soldiers, tasked with guarding Iraqi prisoners, stand accused of committing depraved atrocities against their charges。 Drummond is assigned to defend one of them: a hardscrabble young woman who is either incredibly naive or deceptively evil… and whose incriminating photos made the case an international scandal。

Drummond and his cocounsel, the fiercely antiwar Katherine Carlson, have a complicated and combative history, but they can’t afford to get distracted now。 They must determine what drove five young patriots to fall so far to the dark side of human nature。 As Drummond uncovers evidence that his client has been used as a pawn in a secret strategy involving torture, he realizes that he’s caught up in a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of government。 Breaking down the US military’s formidable stonewalling could destabilize the government and put his life at risk—but Drummond’s not the type to back away from a good fight。

Maybe 4 1/2 stars。 Well-written; good character development; some highly improbable scenes。 Good story line。 Well done!!

Interesting read about a complicated war crime

I couldn’t put it down。Given the explicit descriptions of actual incidents, this book was hard to read but I also HAD to finish it。 The sarcasm/humor employed by the author was a very much needed antidote for the graphic scenes described。 If you’re squeamish don’t read this but there’s lots of good psychological explanations of people’s actions and for military (especially Army) mentality to offset the explicitness。

Another must readTypical fast moving storyline that addresses one of most emotional issues bad wars。 Brian pours his raw emotions his love of country dedication to concern for his clients getting a fair treatment based on many events beyond their control。

Overall, good plotting work, weaving a thriller out of Abu Ghraib-type situation, trying to come up with way that it happened that makes even a mote of sense。 Our protagonist is a JAG lawyer assigned to defend one of the participants。The suspense and the climax are weak compared to the crimes, and the romance arc feels bolted on just because someone (unnecessarily) thought there should be one。But the thing that broke the narrative, constantly pulling me out of the story, was the unremitting, unt Overall, good plotting work, weaving a thriller out of Abu Ghraib-type situation, trying to come up with way that it happened that makes even a mote of sense。 Our protagonist is a JAG lawyer assigned to defend one of the participants。The suspense and the climax are weak compared to the crimes, and the romance arc feels bolted on just because someone (unnecessarily) thought there should be one。But the thing that broke the narrative, constantly pulling me out of the story, was the unremitting, unthinking, oblivious sexism of the main character。 I don't remember this volume of it in previous Drummond books。 In a single character, I can buy the argument that it is just who that character is。 But it also had influence on the narrative choices, and that's the author's problem。Anyway, recommended only for Sean Drummond completists。 。。。more

Excellent book。 I did not expect the ending, although I had hoped for a different outcome it seemed appropriate。 The language was a bit graphic due to the type of crimes that were committed。

More of a mans book。 The plot was interesting and slightly pornographic。 The female characters were under developed for sure。 A crime novel that did the job of keeping us occupied on a summer road trip。

I think Hollywood is sleeping on Lt。 Colonel Sean Drummond for far too long。 Producers need to adapt this into series or at least a tv movie starring Lee Pace as the cocky Lt。 Colonel Sean Drummond。 Nevertheless this is the best in the series yet and please I don't want to wait for years for the next book。 10/10 would recommend this to my friends I think Hollywood is sleeping on Lt。 Colonel Sean Drummond for far too long。 Producers need to adapt this into series or at least a tv movie starring Lee Pace as the cocky Lt。 Colonel Sean Drummond。 Nevertheless this is the best in the series yet and please I don't want to wait for years for the next book。 10/10 would recommend this to my friends 。。。more

Another great whodunitHaig writes some of the best military based stories。 His stories are always entertaining riddles that highlight the life of a Judge Advocate officer and his nemesis, an uptight, liberal civilian lawyer。 The couple cannot seem to admit their attraction as they fight out the culprits fully or innocence。 Great entertainment, I read all their stories!

What can I say, every book from Brian Haig is a 6 star for me。 I love the main character。 It is a multi dimension guy 。 So vivid。

I am clearly in the minority here, as I see a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews。 I was initially quite interested, then lost all enthusiasm after 167 pages。 I realized that there were still 252 more pages to go, and I just could not。 So, I put it down and went to bed。 Today, out of boredom, I picked it back up and skimmed it, then read the last few chapters。 I feel like it was WAY too long and dragged out。

Raymond

This novel certainly illustrates the depravity and atrocities that exist in the contemporary war prison camps and the cover up conspiracies in government! This is a highly entertaining but gross on the order of a Sodom and Gomorrah!

Laura Kandus

At first was a litttle boring, the story was slow, but by half of the book it become interesting and wanted to finish as soon as possible。

Interesting but PredictableA decent military thriller and the first of Mr。 Haig's I've read。Neither Sean nor Katherine are likable or respectable characters。 They both are self-interested, self-centered, and absolutely unwilling to change or compromise their eternal rivalry for a true romance or alliance。As I'd come to expect from the beginning; the novel concludes with the "it must be done for good or evil for the country" with a mindless tone of subservience in spite of earlier conversation。 D Interesting but PredictableA decent military thriller and the first of Mr。 Haig's I've read。Neither Sean nor Katherine are likable or respectable characters。 They both are self-interested, self-centered, and absolutely unwilling to change or compromise their eternal rivalry for a true romance or alliance。As I'd come to expect from the beginning; the novel concludes with the "it must be done for good or evil for the country" with a mindless tone of subservience in spite of earlier conversation。 Definitely a pro-military/military is ALWAYS right even when they're wrong mindset in both author's tone and in his expy。 Sean's, as well。This was an enjoyable read nonetheless and would be recommended for folks in and our of the service。 My advice to the author would be to have some fun and play both sides of the fence once in a while; sometimes civvies are and have the right of it。 。。。more

I am a real fan of the Sean Drummond series。 As with all the books before, this one offered interesting insights into the American military system and its laws and rules。 In this case, the focus was on command control and how the American military handled military prisons in Iraq。 Particularly the second half of the book was riveting and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough。 On the negative side, I have to say that I had to fight the constant urge to mentally throttle Katherine Carlson througho I am a real fan of the Sean Drummond series。 As with all the books before, this one offered interesting insights into the American military system and its laws and rules。 In this case, the focus was on command control and how the American military handled military prisons in Iraq。 Particularly the second half of the book was riveting and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough。 On the negative side, I have to say that I had to fight the constant urge to mentally throttle Katherine Carlson throughout the first part of the book。 I thought her characterization was just a bit too over the top, so that one really could no longer understand her constant need for holding things back from her co-counsel or biting every hand she saw。 Additionally, I found the solution of the book a bit off: especially one part (view spoiler)[ namely the revelation that Willborn had also killed the two army lawyers because they apparently got too close to discovering his crime (hide spoiler)] just did not make a lot of sense to me。 Maybe if this story line had been flashed out a bit more, it would have made sense, but here it just seemed to be unnecessary baggage。 Overall, I quite liked this addition to the series and would definitely like to return to see where Sean Drummond will wreak havoc next。 。。。more

A must read。 Superb writing。 Audible narration was also very adequate for the subject discussed。 Good inside into the JAG corps and the military。

Above average lawyer/spy/with a dash of romance thrown in。 Sort of like “A Few Good Men,” but with all the women’s roles dialed down to “2。” Good pacing, though。 3。5 Stars。

An interesting story, close enough to recent war events, very well written from somebody who knows the military and the politics surrounding it。Easy to read and easy to recommend!

Wow! I am so glad that Brian Haig brought back one of my favorite characters - JAG lawyer, Sean Drummond。 This is a novelization of the enlisted soldiers who were caught torturing Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison。 Haig took a real situation - changed much, but not all - of the facts and turned the story into a page-turning story。 Sean Drummond receives a command to act as co-counsel with a lawyer, Katherine Carlson (readers will remember Katherine almost getting Sean killed in North Korea) a Wow!
